Brazilian soccer star Pele mourned the death of his fellow great Diego Maradona on Wednesday as he said that it is sad to 'lose friends this way'. Diego Maradona died of a heart attack on Wednesday, aged 60. Maradona's attorney confirmed the passing away of the football icon, according to news agency Reuters.

"Certainly, one day we'll kick a ball together in the sky above," he said in a brief statement provided to Reuters by a representative. Maradona, 60, had recently battled health issues and underwent emergency surgery for a subdural hematoma several weeks ago.

He suffered a heart attack at his home in the outskirts of Buenos Aires on Wednesday, Argentinian media and acquaintances of the former player said.

Maradona's rags-to-riches story served as an inspiration for quite a few as he went on to become one of the greatest footballers of all time. The Argentina hero led the national side to World Cup glory in 1986, showcasing that he was a generational talent.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez declared three days of national mourning after the news of Maradona's death.
