Your Weekend Planner Nov 27: Jallikattu for Oscars, Tamasha turns 5
Malayalam film Jallikattu is India's official entry to Oscars 2020. And our favourite layered love story, Tamasha, turned 5. These, and more in our Weekend Planner.
Dear Reader,
You don't get to celebrate the end of a month every week. Once in four weeks, you do. Today happens to be the last Friday of November, the penultimate month of this terrible, terribly long year. We still have December to get through, but let's get to the weekend first.
To start with, Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor's Tamasha turns 5 today. The complex, crazy, outrageously brave film by Imtiaz Ali was our pick for Throwback Thursday this week, and can be your pick for sitting back with if you're craving for some familiar film to watch. This week, US Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris took her Twitter followers into her kitchen with a recipe for Cornbread Dressing. She called it a Thanksgiving favourite, but you can just ruffle it up if you want to. From food to workout (because those calories won't come off JLT). Let Malaika Arora and Disha Patani give you some moves on how to get rid of that stubborn flab.
From the bookshelf today we have Kiley Reid's Such A Fun Age. It was longlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize and is just the fast read you need for a weekend. On OTT, there's a host of stuff ranging from a red uprising in Gadchiroli (Naxalbari), to the horror film Mane Number 13. Oh, and the 'Fabulous' Lives of Bollywood Wives drops on Netflix today.
Have a fun weekend.
WHAT'S TRENDING?
It’s okay. Just slightly more than a month left for 2020 to conclude.
But we doubt that statement will console those suffering from immense agony and pain after legendary footballer Diego Maradona’s death on Wednesday. It is too much to bear for fans but there is little that can be done in 2020 apart from just holding on tight.
After the East endured the wrath of Amphan and West, Nisarga, now it’s South, that is battling Cyclone Nivar. Heavy rains, trees uprooted, basically destruction.
Meanwhile, residents of Ghaziabad need to be alert since a leopard was spotted walking down a street in the Rajnagar area. CCTV footage of the incident went viral and officials directed people to stay home instead of stepping out to investigate further.
Elon Musk, on the other hand, is in a happy space as he toppled Bill Gates as the second richest person in the world. The internet celebrated with memes, not just in the case of Elon Musk, but also after a desi version of Twitter called Tooter was launched. Well!
Social media also laughed out loud after watching a video of a kid scolding a barber for cutting his hair. Richa Chadha and Divya Dutta enjoyed the clip that went crazy viral.
As for Hrithik Roshan fans, this story of a man from Imphal will certainly delight you. Hrishikesh Angom, an ardent admirer of Hrithik Roshan, has named his newborn son after the celebrated actor. His son, in fact, was born with six fingers on one hand - a double thumb just like Hrithik has. Good wishes, Hrishikesh.
Lastly, as for those in need of dire motivation after Maradona’s death, Anand Mahindra might be able to help with his motivational lines.
Else, we cannot make up for the loss but at the least, can try to make you feel better with some stories that will surely make you smile.
SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE
Dogs over people, any day, is the conclusion that the internet arrived at after watching this super cute video of a Golden Retriever puppy enjoying his first snow. Awwww, guaranteed.
Also, did you see the video of the “cutest butterfly” that Harsh Goenka posted? It’s just terribly adorable.
And here’s a toddler, excited to hold his newborn baby sister for the first time. We watched it on loop, by the way.
DON'T STOP WORKING OUT
This week’s workout motivation comes directly from Bollywood’s popular fitness enthusiast, Malaika Arora. The star, who is known for living a healthy lifestyle, has a series called Malaika’s Move of the Week and every Monday she comes up with an incredible yoga pose. This week’s pose is Tulasana, and according to her it is “extremely helpful in relaxing muscles, strengthening arms and upper body region.” She even shared easy tips to nail the pose.
Before we leave you with the Weekend Planner, some news: Malayalam film Jallikattu is India's official entry to Oscars 2021. We're keeping those fingers crossed!
Another star who gave us the perfect boost to hit the grind this week is Disha Patani. She recently uploaded an Instagram story of herself doing the barbell squat. She did squats while lifting 80 kg of weight, as her trainer supported her in the clip.
KHAANE MEIN KYA HAI?
This was Thanksgiving week, and in case you feel like indulging in this tradition from the States with a delectable dish, US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris recently shared her detailed recipe of Cornbread Dressing.
To make the dish, you will need cornbread mix, spicy pork sausages, onions, apples, celery stalks, chicken broth, unsalted butter, fresh parsley, sage, thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper to taste. Then, begin by baking the cornbread as per the instructions on the package. Crumble it once it cools down. Stir fry the sausages by crumbling them. Remove from the pan and set aside. Saute the vegetables and the chopped apples in the same oil.
Mix the cornbread with the sausages, veggies, melted butter, herbs and chicken broth. Put the mixture in a baking dish and bake at 375 F for around 40 minutes. Serve hot.
FROM THE BOOKSHELF
Women writing about women. If there's anything modern literature needs more of, is badass women writers writing about badass women characters. This is where Iowa Writers' Workshop graduate Kiley Reid and her 305-page comment on class, race and gender, the very zeitgeist if you will - Such A Fun Age - fit right in. Such A Fun Age traces the life of babysitter Emira, the three-year-old baby she sits Briar, and Briar's mother Alix Chamberlain.
The book starts in a supermarket as Emira is accused of kidnapping Briar, a video that shouldn't have been filmed, and paths that shouldn't have crossed. Quite like Kelley Copeland and Alex Murphy's. Witty writing blends in with fleshed-out characters, and the several women and their several quirks, Such A Fun Age is a tale that talks of our time, from #BlackLivesMatter to who/what Instagram influencers influence. And underneath it all, is a perfectly rounded-off story, about a woman whose life is perfectly rounded off as Reid signs off. Pick up Such A Fun Age for a fast, fun weekend read.
FASHION KA JALWA
It’s been five years since Imtiaz Ali’s acclaimed 2015 hit Tamasha released and to commemorate it, we discussed Deepika Padukone’s style ka Safarnama in Tamasha for our Fashion Friday section this week. Cast as Tara, in Tamasha, Deepika was all about that boho-chic vibe amalgamated with the girl-next-door charm. Short dresses, cord necklaces, anklets, shirt shrugs, the works. Read more here.
AT THE MOVIES
Malayalam film Jallikattu is India's official entry into the 93rd Academy Awards. Yes, there's still a long way to go for the Lijo Jose Pellissery's masterpiece, but can we take a moment to acknowledge that, especially after Parasite won the Oscar for Best Picture, stakes and scope are really high for non-English content? More on that here.
While Jallikattu races ahead, here's looking some older films in our weekly section. For Monday Masala, we revisited Dhoom 2, and how it gave birth to Hrithik Roshan 2.0. Thank you. On Tuesday Trivia, we cycled through the streets of Goa with Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt, and learnt a bunch of stuff about the Gauri Shinde directorial venture. Akshay Kumar and John Abraham's Desi Boyz was the subject of this week's Wahiyat Wednesday. We don't need to explain why, now do we? And Throwback Thursday was dedicated to Imtiaz Ali's last genuine love story, Tamasha.
Thursday was also the 12th anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. And we took a look at how the real even influenced pop culture. Two sides of the same story - through Hotel Mumbai and State Of Siege 26/11. ICYMI, they're both available on Zee5. Now, off to OTT.
