US Election Results LIVE Updates: Joe Biden wins Wisconsin, Michigan, 6 electoral votes away from Presidency

New Delhi and Washington | November 05, 2020 08:10 IST

US Election Results LIVE Updates: Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has won the battleground states of Wisconsin and Michigan, which have taken him closer to the winning mark of 270 electoral votes. Joe Biden is now 6 electoral votes away from winning the US presidency while Donald Trump is at 214. The final results are yet to come even after an entire day of counting. Donald Trump’s victory in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in 2016 had ensured his entry into the White House. The 2020 US election results in these battleground states come as a huge blow to the Trump campaign after they flipped from Republicans to Democrats. Joe Biden has won more overall votes than any presidential candidate in US history, surpassing the record set by Barack Obama in 2008. Meanwhile, Donald Trump's campaign and the Georgia Republican Party have filed a lawsuit against the Chatham County Board of Elections asking a judge to order the county to secure and account for ballots received after 7 pm on Election Day. Michigan secretary of state calls Trump lawsuit 'frivolous'

Michigan's secretary of state said on Wednesday that the lawsuit by Donald Trump seeking to halt counting of votes was "frivolous." Several US news channels predicted Democrat Joe Biden as the winner of Michigan on Wednesday afternoon (local time), giving him 16 electoral votes toward the 270 he needs to win the presidency as ballot counting goes on in several other key states. Campaign officials for Trump have said that they filed lawsuits in Michigan to stop the counting there and gain greater access to the tabulation process.

Trump campaign files lawsuit against county over ballots

As Joe Biden inches closer towards winning the US presidency, Donald Trump's campaign and the Georgia Republican Party have sued the Chatham County Board of Elections asking a judge to order the county to secure and account for ballots received after 7 pm on Election Day. State party chair David Shafer said in a statement that they planned to sue in a dozen counties. The lawsuit alleges that a Republican observer watched a poll worker take unprocessed absentee ballots from a back room and mix them into processed absentee ballots waiting to be tabulated. Donald Trump had earlier said that he will be moving the US Supreme Court against the ‘fraud’ on the nation of using ballots for election.

Joe Biden wins 71 million votes, most in US history

Even after over 24 hours of Election Day counting, final results are yet to come and neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump can be declared the winner just yet. Neither have reached the majority of 270 Electoral College votes required to secure the presidency. However, Joe Biden's victories in the Great Lakes states has left him at 264 electoral votes, meaning he is just one battleground state away from crossing the threshold and becoming the president-elect. Joe Biden has received more than 71 million votes, the most in history. While Joe Biden is now expected to win the presidency, he has stopped short of outright declaring victory. Donald Trump on the other hand had declared they have won the election yesterday itself.

Biden wins Wisconsin, Michigan, inches closer towards Presidency

Democrat Joe Biden has secured the battleground state of Michigan and its 16 electoral votes, which has further damaged Donald Trump’s chances to a second term at the White House. Joe Biden has also won Wisconsin, which has taken him further close to the magic figure of 270 electoral votes, which will secure his US presidency. Right now, Joe Biden is at 264 electoral votes while Donald Trump is at 214. The flip in these states from Republicans to Democrats comes as a huge blow to Donald Trump, whose victories in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in 2016 sent him to the White House. While Joe Biden has secured Wisconsin and Michigan, Pennsylvania hasn’t been called yet. Nevada, which has six electoral votes, is among the states Democrat Hillary Clinton won in 2016 that hasn’t yet been called. Joe Biden’s campaign had particularly focused on turning out Black voters in Detroit, who failed to show up for Democrat Hillary Clinton in the numbers that Barack Obama received during his two presidential bids. On the other hand, despite needing to win Michigan, Donald Trump took frequent swipes at the state’s Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, who was the target of an alleged kidnapping plot that was foiled by federal law enforcement. Chants of “Lock her up!” toward Whitmer echoed at Trump’s rally, and he railed against the governor on Twitter for her cautious approach to the coronavirus pandemic.
