Assam: Baghjan gas well blowout 'killed', fire doused after five and half months, says OIL
The gas well had a blowout during a workover operation on May 27 and it caught fire on June 9.

The damaged gas well at Baghjan oil field in Assam’s Tinsukia district has been successfully killed and fire doused on Sunday after five and half months of effort.
The fire was raging after a gas blowout at the Baghjan gas well number 5 of Oil India Limited in Tinsukia district since June 9.
Oil India Limited had brought a snubbing unit from Canada and the five-member team reached Baghjan on November 5 to douse the fire and killed the gas blowout.
In a statement, Oil India Limited said that the Baghjan blowout well successfully killed with brine solution. It now under control and the fire has been doused completely.
“There is no pressure in the well now and the same will be observed for 24 hours to check if there is any amount of gas migration and pressure build-up. A further operation to abandon the well is in progress. Dr P Chandrasekaran, Director (Exploration & Development ), PK Goswami, Director(Operations) and DK Das, Resident Chief Executive visited the Baghjan well site and had detailed discussions with the experts from Alert and OIL team,” said the statement.
Oil India Limited tweeted “Baghjan blowout well successfully killed: The well has been killed with brine solution & under control now. The fire has been doused completely. There is no pressure in the well now & d same will b observed for 24 hrs to check if there is any amount of gas migration & pressure build-up.”
The gas well had a blowout during a workover operation on May 27 and it caught fire on June 9.
Two firefighters were killed in the fire incident at the gas well on June 9 and many villagers living nearby the site were forced to leave their homes after the incident.
On September 9, an electrical engineer of the OIL lost his life due to high voltage electric shock when he was engaged in the works to douse the fire at the Baghjan oil field.
